Described as the “New Oil” of the Future Economy, data has the potential to shape economies around the world. Just as oil has driven much of the world’s economic developments, data is the new value driver.  Data will drive the creation of a new generation of products and services that will reshape entire industries. In a digitalized and connected world where data is increasingly ubiquitous, both developed as well as emerging economies recognise that data should be treated and developed as a resource, similar to other conventional assets such as property or human capital. Nations are now taking a collaborative approach between industry and Government to catalyse data-driven innovations. There are many areas within the data ecosystem to capitalise on, such as data processing, analytics, security, standards and more. Enterprises themselves are beginning to realise opportunities and benefits of such data asset value extraction activities. Benefits include cost reductions, optimised tracking of inventory and increased revenue. Data owners across industry sectors are beginning to view their data assets as not only fundamentally valuable, but also economically viable to distribute, resulting in a growing marketplace for data. While the commercialization of data presents enormous opportunities, there are pre-requisites that companies, organizations and governments must overcome to fully harness the potential of data as a commercial value driver.

About the Trainer

Zaid is CEO of the Asia Law Exchange, a managed legal service technology provider. A technology lawyer specializing in data, cybersecurity, intellectual property and legal data analytics, he has conducted data asset management programs in Singapore and Malaysia.

With over 30 years of professional experience in the legal, technology and government sectors, Zaid has served as Director at Microsoft; Chief Legal Officer at Telekom Malaysia and Senior Legal Advisor at Singtel’s JV with Warner Bros and Sony Pictures. He teaches Legal Analytics and AI at the Law School, Singapore Management University as an Adjunct Faculty. An Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore he teaches cybersecurity law and governance risk and compliance to graduate students and professionals. Author of 9 books on technology innovation and the law, Zaid is admitted as an Advocate & Solicitor, Singapore and Solicitor, England & Wales. He graduated with a Bachelor of Law from the National University of Singapore and was awarded the Fulbright scholarship for his Master in International Relation at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, USA. His research areas of interest: Legal data analytics and artificial intelligence especially in the context of cybersecurity risks and strategic legal and regulatory compliance.
